The Volkswagen Golf GTi is an iconic hatchback that solidified its place in automotive history as a practical performance car. The Mk. II featured a 1.8 litre inline-four engine producing some 137bhp with its 16-valve engine. While modest by modern standards, its lightweight design, precise five-speed manual transmission, and lively engine made it thrilling to drive. The GTi delivered sharp handling, thanks to a well-tuned suspension, front-wheel drive, and excellent weight distribution. Its compact dimensions made it nimble on twisty roads and a breeze to drive in urban environments. Visually the hallmark design elements of the GTi lineage: bold red accents on the grille, squared-off styling, and alloy wheels. Inside, the plaid-patterned sport seats and ergonomic layout underscored its driver-focused ethos. Practicality was another strong suit. The hatchback design provided ample cargo space, and its robust engineering made it dependable and relatively affordable to maintain.
First registered 23rd April 1992, this iconic Mk. II 16v 'Big Bumper' Golf GTi is presented in the desirable colour of Oak Green. The car had an extensive refurbishment programme carried out in June/July 2024 and presents very well indeed, this followed our vendor requesting a full inspection of the vehicle to include a detailed breakdown of recommended and urgent work to be carried out. Subsequently the engine bay was to be restored to 'virtually new' with a vehicle health check and plan to replace any parts as necessary.
The engine bay restoration is now described as comprehensive and included a deep clean, vapor blasting, zinc plating and de-rusting of components. There is a comprehensive list of new replacement parts to improve and car's performance and appearance. The engine bay work included the restoration of many aluminium and steel components while the opportunity was taken to replace any items found to be beyond their best to ensure future reliability. New replacement parts included Bosch injectors, alternator voltage regulator, rotor arm, manifold gaskets, exhaust rubbers and kick panel and pedal rubbers replacement, to name a few, the list is long! To emphasise the care taken to produce a smooth-running classic, a new clutch was also recently fitted in August.
A five-door model, it combines practicality with sportscar handling with a manual gear box and what the client describes as a very smooth running and responsive engine. We are informed everything worked well at time of consignment and this GTi is offered with a good history file including details of the recent refurbishment. An unmolested example with original trim, engine and no holes in the rear parcel shelf, this is a well-maintained, privately-owned Mk. II, a car our vendor purchased after remembering how wonderful it was to own one in the early 90's. Consigned by Mathew Priddy
