The car was longer, wider, and stiffer than its predecessor, the 993, yet lighter due to the use of high-strength steel and other weight-saving measures. The 996 Turbo, launched in 2000, epitomised the series' advancements. It featured all-wheel drive, a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre Mezger engine, and robust performance that made it a benchmark among supercars.
