The paintwork presents beautifully with a bright polished uniform shine to the original panels which are straight and free from dings or damage. Some paint blemishes and carefully touched in markings do not detract from the cars appeal and are entirely forgiven considering the originality. This garaged example with ultra-low mileage is also structurally perfect throughout including the underside. The trim sections, glass, Unipart lights, and badges are brilliantly preserved. Supplying dealer fitted number plates, rear screen sticker and tax disc holder remain fitted to cement this car amazing originality. Eagle-eyed Montego experts will note the grille badge in the original design fitted to only the earliest cars, subsequently replaced by the blue and green striped Austin worded badge. An incredibly rare surviving example guaranteed to amaze in its condition and factory originality. INTERIOR The L specification interior features Marle and Striped velour seats and upholstery in deliciously chocolatey Brushwood Brown, (Code AMV). The interior is in spotless condition and the seats show no notable wear and retain perfect firmness and shape. Touch points such as the steering wheel, gear knob and door handles reflect the super-low mileage showing no wear. The headlining is fully intact with no sagging and door cards are pristine. Tailored rubber Montego mats have preserved the carpets and the dashboard is fully intact with no cracks, fading or distortion thanks to indoor storage since new away from harmful UV damage. Complete originality is retained even down to the Austin radio cassette which is fully operational and comes with the Now 1984 double cassette free of charge! Delightfully swathed in 1980’s brownness! ENGINE & TRANSMISSION New for the Montego was the 1.6 litre S-Series engine developing 85bhp and 132Nm maximum torque to achieve a top speed of 102mph with 0-60mph in 10.9 seconds. The engine bay is beautifully clean with perfect structure to the original inner wings, strut tops and chassis legs. Even incredible delicate factory labels, stickers, and body plates are intact along with the clear VIN stamping to the offside strut housing. The five-speed gear box is light and precise. WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES Oblong slotted pressed steel rims wear the correct L-specification hub caps which are immaculate and five matching Michelin TDXE 180/65 R365 TD tyres show plenty of tread, the spare being unused. The diagonally split dual-circuit hydraulic brakes with servo assistance offer ample stopping power. HISTORY FILE A fascinating example with an interesting history. Registered new on the 30th November 1984, the Montego having only been launched the previous April makes this example a very early car. The supplying Austin Rover dealership was Bell’s Garage in Halesowen and their new vehicle order form and sales invoice in the history file is made out to first owner, Mr Dodd. A loyal customer, Mr Dodd part exchanged his Austin Princess which he had also purchased new from Bell’s Garage in 1977, for which he received £200 against the £5,433.60 for his new Montego. Paperwork in the history file and stamped entries in the service book confirm that until 1995 when Mr Dodd passed away, the car had always been to the supplying dealership for service and maintenance and all service reminder letters and main dealer invoices were kept. Following his passing, the car remained at the Dodd’s family home with his son who could not bear to part with the last car his father bought, and it did so until his passing in 2021. At this point, the family seeking to settle his estate discovered the car in the garage where it had been unused for almost three decades! The previous owner who bought the car as a ‘garage find’ has undergone full recommissioning including major service, cambelt, brake overhaul and sourcing of correct replacement TD tyres. A further oil service has been carried out in August 2025. The history file also consists of MOT records before and after the cars long term dry storage as well as the Leyland Cars full handbook pack. There are three original keys including the rare blue master key, two supplying dealer fobs and a year of launch Montego sales brochure. Even the service card to be hung from the rear-view mirror has been kept! Without quibble, this is along the finest surviving Montego’s in existence. MOT September 2026, HPI Clear.
